Installing a Smart Thermostat

Our new and old thermostats

One of the first smart devices I installed into our home was our new thermostat.  Nothing worse then going on vacation and realizing you left your AC on, spending all that money keeping an empty house cold.  They can range in price anywhere from $75-$300 depending on features you want and how pretty you want it to look as well as where you purchase it from.  We went with a more simple one Sensi by Emerson.

Smart thermostats have many great features, however our favorites are being able to control it anywhere in the world and being able to view our history on when and for how long it was used each day.

The Install:  It was super easy to install, I believe I spent maybe 45-60 minutes and the instructions for the install are built right into the app during setup.  You will need a screwdriver, drill, pencil and a level.

Basic instructions for the install remember each device is different so this may vary

  • At the circuit breaker panel, shut off the power to the furnace.
  • Remove the thermostat cover and locate the wires from the furnace.
  • Label each wire with the labels supplied with the new thermostat, then disconnect them.
  • Remove the old thermostat from the wall. Spread the furnace control wires apart to keep them from falling behind the wall.  A trick you can do is also to wrap them around a pencil to avoid this
  • Remove the base from the new thermostat and position it on the wall where the previous thermostat was located. Use a level to make sure it is straight so the internal sensor will be accurate.
  • Mark the wall through the mounting holes on the base.
  • Remove the base and use your marks for reference to drill holes for mounting. Use a drill bit slightly smaller in diameter than the screws you’ll be using.
  • Feed the wires through the base of the thermostat, and screw the base unit into position. If you’re mounting the thermostat to drywall, use the drywall anchors supplied with the new thermostat kit.
  • Attach the labeled furnace control wires to the corresponding terminals on the base. Follow the new unit’s wiring instructions carefully — color codes may not apply to your wiring.
  • Install the thermostat body to the base.

Program the unit according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

Warning: If you are viewing the instructions for your project and are confused or not may not feel confident enough, it’s time to call that wiring-savvy friend or electrician. Remember there’s no shame in getting someone else to do this project for you if you lack the skill or knowledge.
