Not Afraid of Ladybugs

Written by: Heather on

LadybugIt seems that unless you have Coccinellidaephobia (fear of ladybugs) or you are a gardener.  Ladybugs along with butterflies seem to be some of the few acceptable beetles / insects that people generally seem to be okay with.   If you see a lady bug you may be okay with it, but with any other beetle we tend to freak out and kill it or screech and run from it.

Maybe it’s because they are considered colorful and cute with their little red bodies and black dots.  Or is it because we are told and believe they will bring you good luck if they land on you or are in your home?  I know that is what I like to think.  I also like to think when I see a ladybug or a butterfly that it’s one of our Mom’s visiting us.

We were outside on our patio last night playing dominoes, drinking wine and listening to music when a ladybug decided to visit us.  I picked it up and looked at it then let it fly off and do its thing.

Random Facts I found

  • Not All Are Black and Red
  • The Name “Lady” Refers to the Virgin Mary
  • Ladybug Larvae Resemble Tiny Alligators
  • Eat a Tremendous Number of Insects, up to 50 aphids a day
  • Used to Control Other Insects
  • Ladybugs Practice Cannibalism

Are you afraid of Ladybugs, or do you believe they bring good luck?

As I sat there with the lil guy on me I thought of the movie, A Bugs Life.  Here is a great bloopers/gag reel they put together

  1. I used to love ladybugs until I heard that the black one with the red spots were poisonous or something like that. And it really scared me when I was younger. So now I’m just afraid of them. The joys of childhood logic lol
