The Word BITCH

the word bitchDoes the word bitch offend you?

Before we get into that, lets look at what it really means which is a “female dog.”

When and how did it turn into being a derogatory term towards women?  “Dog” has long been used as an insult toward both women and men.  To describe someone whose behavior was improper, who had lack of restraint, hospitality, loyalty, and indiscriminate or excessive violence.  The earliest use of “bitch” specifically as a derogatory term for women dates to the fourteenth century.  The earliest slang meaning mainly referred to sexual behavior.  The early applications were to a promiscuous or sensual woman, a metaphorical extension of the behavior of a bitch in heat.

Does it offend me?  No it doesn’t offend me at all, I know I am a bitch.  However if my wife called me a bitch out of hate, I may not like it to much.  However I do understand the difference between saying, “you are a bitch” vs “you’re acting like a bitch”

I used to work at Wal-Mart about 20 years ago and I happened to upset a customer in the electronics department when I came and told him that we didn’t have the TV in stock that he wanted. He then called me a bitch, and I replied with “yep I am, and proud of it” had I been quick enough I would of also said to him, “what’s your excuse”. Yeah I know I probably shouldn’t have said that, but oh well. I think I pissed him off even more with my response as he stormed out.  I am surprised he didn’t complain to someone about that.

As far as I know and forgive me if I’m wrong, but most of my friends have no problem with it either.

So what do you think? Is it offensive?
